Sammi Lanzetta won a raffle at an Our House event last year that awarded her few hours of free studio time at Virginia Moonwalker. Lanzetta sang and played bass with Venus Guytrap, but over that year she started exploring her own songwriting and saw the free studio time as a chance to jumpstart those ideas. Not one to let an opportunity go to waste, she called up her friends Tommy Crisafulli and Caleb Knight to jam with her.
Crisafulli and Knight had never met, but the trio became quick friends and eventually transformed her solo project into an infectious power trio. Little did they know that those impromptu sessions would snowball into their debut EP, For Avery, out on 6131 Records on October 6th.
“The three of us clicked immediately,” Crisafulli said of their early time at Moonwalker. “It’s been an adventure that’s allowed me to go out on two tours so far, something I’d always dreamed of, and introduced me to some of the most interesting people I’ve met.”
The trio released their first single,”House Plants,” in May of 2016. Still a fixture of their raucous sets, Dust Up filmed the song during the Friends for Equality benefit for Nationz Foundation last month at Strange Matter.
After playing around Richmond and touring the northeast, the band came to the attention of 6131 Records. Founded in Huntington Beach, Ca. and partially based out of Richmond, Lanzetta and co. knew the label as fans of breakout albums by Joyce Manor, Julien Baker and Dads as well as locals Teen Death and Swamp Thing.
“I’m so excited to be joining the 6131 family with some of my favorite artists,” Lanzetta said in a Facebook post. “Thank you for anyone who has supported me through all of my insane horse shit.”
In keeping with Lanzetta’s knack for matter-of-fact social criticism and humorous storytelling, the new track uses vignettes of unsolicited advice and judgments from men in Lanzetta’s life to weave a scathing rebuttal of the patriarchy she experienced growing up.
To hear more from Lanzetta and co. you can preorder the tape and a new shirt from 6131 Records or Bandcamp. Sammi Lanzetta plays a rare solo acoustic set at The Camel on September 24th, and the full band returns to The Camel to celebrate their release on October 12th with Illiterate Light, Piranha Rama and Secret Nudist Friends.
